Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals

This new project aims to measurably reduce Americans exposure to harmful endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The project will focus on reducing exposure to the most harmful EDCs in use in the near-term, while laying the foundation for longer-term policy reform to prevent additional harmful EDCs from being introduced. The Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals project is a collaboration between Pews Environment and Government Performance portfolios.

The Environment Portfolio focuses on science-based, nonpartisan, and sustainable solutions to help protect the planet and people . We work in partnership with governments, Indigenous rights holders, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, local stakeholders, scientists, and other researchers to advance public policy so that nature and communities can thrive.

The Government Performance portfolio provides the nonpartisan research, solutions, and momentum decisionmakers need to ensure our institutions improve the health of people in the United States and enable them to successfully climb the economic ladder. Those goals are pursued through a wide range of the portfolios policy-focused projects (with explorations into new areas underway)from ensuring states finances are prepared for future volatility, to unlocking gateways to mental health care, to addressing the nations lack of attainable housing.

Position Overview

The project director, private sector, leads a team of approximately three staff and will be responsible for identifying priorities, challenges, and strategies to increase private sector partnership and participation in Pews efforts to reduce Americans exposure to harmful endocrine disrupting chemicals. T he project director will lead the development and implementation of strategies for engaging the private sector and other stakeholder groups on ways to reduce exposure to harmful EDCs. The project director is expected to maintain detailed knowledge of public policy and regulatory activity on topics such as chemical oversight, and market and corporate trends.

The project director will focus on building collaborative relationships with relevant stakeholders such as corporate officials, subject matter experts and relevant organizations. Effective leadership and communication skills are preferred, along with expertise in balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders through a nonpartisan lens. To achieve key tasks, the project director must develop close working relationships and become a trusted advisor to staff across each of the projects workstreams.

The project director reports to the director and is based in Pews Washington, D . C ., office. The position will participate in Pews core in-office days on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with flexibility to work from home the remainder of each week.

Responsibilities

  • Foster a work environment that is supportive , accessible, and in line with Pew and the projects related goals.

  • Oversee and lead the work of the Private Sector workstream.

  • Manage and mentor members of the project, including day-to-day leadership and ongoing professional development.

  • Develop analyses of private sector stakeholders of interest to project goals, including but not limited to, identifying priorities, challenges, and industries to prioritize.

  • Oversee the design and implement a strategy for increasing corporate participation in voluntary data-sharing efforts related to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, such as PFAS, bisphenols, and phthalates.

  • Lead efforts to secure corporate and sector-wide commitments to phase out or reduce their use of harmful endocrine disrupting chemicals.

  • Oversee the development of a strategic approach to support pre-competitive industry groups to invest in alternatives to harmful endocrine chemicals.

  • Identify key incentives for driving change towards safer alternatives.

  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with relevant corporate officials, subject matter experts, government departments and officials, and non-governmental organizations.

  • Collaborate with leadership in adjacent workstreams (i.e., Policy, Cross-cutting, Science teams) to ensure that project goals are aligned and met.

  • Cultivate and maintain detailed knowledge of public policy discussions, regulatory activity , and other relevant changes to policies and practices related to endocrine disrupting chemicals.

  • Represent the project publicly at conferences, meetings, and other events and in the media .

  • Participate in activities that support program and Pew-wide objectives .

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent work experience.

  • Generally, ten years of applicable experience, including staff, project, and/or consultant management experience.

  • Experience related to endocrine disrupting chemicals, health or science policy, or chemical oversight strongly preferred.

  • Experience working closely with private sector partners and building corporate partnerships. Knowledge of how to meaningfully engage relevant stakeholders, and approach issues with a nonpartisan, evidence-based , and objective mindset in a rapidly changing environment.

  • Experience managing a team effectively and building collaborative relationships.

  • B ackground in driving significant improvements and achieving measurable outcomes.

  • Seasoned judgment and comfort in making decisions, justifying recommendations, and being responsive, clear, and firm with colleagues and partners.

  • Effective and results-oriented planner for both short- and long-term programmatic goals and orienting these goals to align with the project team and institutions procedures.

  • Excellent oral, writing, and editing skills.

Travel

This position requires frequent domestic travel to meetings and conferences .

Work Authorization

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the country for which they are seeking employment without visa sponsorship.

Salary Range

$159,200 USD - $177,900 USD

The salary range represents a reasonable estimate of the annual salary based on Pews commitment to provide equitable and market-competitive pay. The actual salary offered will take into consideration many factors including but not limited to job-related knowledge, skills and experience, internal pay equity, and business need.
