Band Director

Supervised by/Reports to: Principal

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Goals:

  1. To carry out the goals and objectives of the school band program.
  2. To instruct band students for the development of their individual musical skills and for the development of the school's band program.
  3. To provide leadership in character development and musicianship.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited university.
  2. Valid Alabama professional educator certificate in the area of instrumental music or other applicable subject area.
  3. Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  4. Ability to plan, lead, manage, evaluate, and implement programs for student success.
  5. Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  6. Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.
  7. Ability to organize and supervise students, volunteers or designated staff members; manage budgets; and, develop curriculum and programming specific to the needs of students as designated.
  8. Knowledge and skill in the development and operation of a school instrumental music program.
  9. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
  10. Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  11. Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
  12. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  13. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
  2. Serves as a role model and works toward the development of good character and desirable attitudes among students.
  3. Establishes a positive classroom climate and effectively manages band and instrumental music instruction within that environment.
  4. Utilizes innovative teaching techniques and technology as a teaching tool to plan and provide instruction; acts as a facilitator for students in the use of technology in the classroom.
  5. Displays technical competence in band direction.
  6. Develops and implements a program of instruction based upon the goals and standards of the National Association for Music Education.
  7. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  8. Develops an appropriate and justifiable system for the evaluation and grading of students under his/her supervision.
  9. Prepares the band and other instrumental groups for appropriate public performances.
  10. Directs the organization and supervision of students during classes and at public events.
  11. Works with other band directors and school officials in the school system to ensure a continuous and correlated development through all levels of band instruction.
  12. Coordinates the preparation and distribution of materials that inform students and their parents of the requirements for band participation, band policies, schedules, and related program information.
  13. Attends meetings, practices, games, events and activities associated with assigned band direction responsibilities.
  14. Works with the principal, school staff and boosters in improving and maintaining equipment, uniforms, and band resources.
  15. Demonstrates professional and ethical behavior at all times.
  16. Prepares and administers the band program budgets; maintains equipment inventory and maintenance records; coordinates scheduling, transportation, supervision and publicity for the school band program.
  17. Recommends and oversees sales and advertising campaigns to benefit the band program; seeks collaborative partnerships with community agencies and grant sources to benefit the band program.
  18. Expends funds and makes purchases for the band program in accordance with established school system accounting procedures.
  19. Supervises and coordinates participation in competitive events involving individual band students and the school band program.
  20. Coordinates the auxiliary groups such as dance lines, majorettes and color guard that perform with the band.
  21. Coordinates maintenance and use of instrumental music equipment and facilities.
  22. Promotes the band program through recruiting and publicity activities.
  23. Supervises students during assigned duty before, during and/or after school as directed.
  24. Supervises and/or assists with extracurricular and co-curricular activities and assigned.
  25. Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law.
  26. Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.
  27. Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  28. Properly cares for equipment and material resources of the school system.
  29. Uses collaboration skills to work as a productive team member.
  30. Serves as needed on committees, representative bodies, and/or task forces.
  31. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws.
  32. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  33. Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger dexterity, to handle, or feel objects, equipment, or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, squat, crouch and kneel. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull carry and/or move to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include near vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Salary: Salary to be established by The Limestone County School's District Salary Schedule.

Terms of Employment: 187 plus number of supplemental days
